Find Your Way in Candlemaking: How to Turn a Cozy Hobby into a Source of Income

reading time: 2 minutes

Candles are found in every home, but have you ever thought that they are more than just a source of light?
For many, a candle is just a way to light a room, for others it is a way to add coziness and aesthetics to the interior, but for you it can become a matter of life.

Today, candles are a distinct art form, made right in your own kitchen. Candlemaking is a path to inspiration, savings on gifts, and a new profession that brings income and allows you to build a career without leaving home.

Today we'll explore how this industry works, why training is the fastest path to success, and the secret to the demand for seasonal collections.

We've become accustomed to thinking of a candle as a humble wax cylinder, gathering dust for years in a drawer "in case the power goes out." But that era is gone forever.

Today, a candle isn't a way to combat darkness; it's a way to fill a space with inner light. A modern candle is a fully-fledged art object. It no longer has to be straightforward and predictable. Today, it's a sculpture, a frozen emotion, a masterpiece of fine craftsmanship.

1. Stone Magic: Geode Candles

Look at these geode candles. Can you believe they're made of wax? They're an ode to natural perfection: deep "cracks," the shimmer of wax crystals that mimic amethyst, and the subtlest color transitions. Each candle is unique—just as no two identical stones exist in nature, no two geode candles are exactly alike. They are treasures, crafted in the hands of a master craftsman, destined to become the focal point of your interior.

2. Candles "Soviet Christmas Tree Decorations"

Contemporary art can also be touching. My candles in the shape of Soviet Christmas tree decorations are a tender "greetings from the past." That same glass house, lantern, or Gena the Crocodile that we so reverently pulled out of cotton wool as children has now found a new life in warm wax. It's a portal to our fondest memories, a unique artifact that unites generations.

3. Flower Candles

If geodes represent the power of the earth, and Soviet toys the warmth of memory, then flower candles are the embodiment of pure tenderness. They are the very essence of femininity.

Imagine petals that seem so alive and translucent that you're afraid to touch them. This is a masterpiece of wax work, where every curve of a rose, peony, or magnolia conveys the sophistication and refined beauty of nature. Such a candle doesn't just decorate a space—it transforms its energy. It brings the atmosphere of a blooming garden into your home, even if it's January outside. These candles possess a special sophistication: they are created for those who appreciate details, who see beauty in small things, and who choose to surround themselves with things that have soul. The flower candle symbolizes that art can be fragile, yet still give incredible inner strength and inspiration to every woman.

Why candle making?

1. Environmentally friendly.

We no longer use technical paraffin. It's been replaced by natural soy, palm, and coconut waxes, among others. They're eco-friendly, burn long, and impart fragrances perfectly. But the key is the shape. A candle isn't just straight; it's now a true work of art, a true art object.

2.Style and fashion.

Candles are more than just a thing. They're a way of life. Today, a candle is about the aesthetics of the moment, the comfort of a blizzard outside and the crackling of a wooden wick at home. It's the beauty that makes you slow down and simply watch the flame dance, the warmth you give yourself after a long day. The candle has become a fashionable detail, an accessory that sets the tone of the home. It has become part of our daily life and seems to never go out of style. Because the human need for warmth, beauty, and a little personal wonder is something that remains constant throughout time.

3. Ideal for women.

Today, candle makers possess a wide range of skills across a variety of fields and professions: florist, chemist, designer, perfumer, sculptor, and artist. Modern candle making encompasses so many different niches and fields that it makes candle making one of the most sought-after hobbies and professions for women and others.

I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Natalia. I've been making candles for a year and a half now.
And the only thing I regret is: Why didn’t I go into candles earlier?
  • In this niche, I found an outlet, pleasure, beauty and aesthetics, and even my main source of income.
  • Candlemaking inspires me. I invented and patented my own wax paper making technique, wrote and published a book about flower candles, and launched the Big Flower Course, which now includes over 43 flowers and six of all existing flower candle-making techniques. I can be proud of this, and you will be able to gain knowledge, the uniqueness of which is documented.
  • Candlemaking isn't just a hobby for me; it's my life and a constant pursuit of exploration. I'm proud to have taken this craft to the next level. My "Winter Candles" course was a true breakthrough in the industry: I revealed unique techniques to the world that were previously thought impossible. My "snowbound roses" caused a real sensation in the professional community. I saw how this idea ignited hundreds of artists across the country, inspiring them to try their hand at creating this intricate, frosty beauty.

I couldn't even dream of this! And all this in just a year and a half. It's pure love! I'm sure you, too, can find new discoveries and achievements in candle making—the key is to just get started!

My creative journey began eight years ago with epoxy resin, but wax and candles have literally changed my life. If you're looking for change, I recommend candle making.

To become a sought-after candlemaker, it's important to be proficient in a variety of techniques. I've identified two of the most prominent trends in candle making:

1. Flower Candles
Eternal summer in interior design. Flower candles are a symbol of tenderness and sophistication. In the Flower Course, we learn how to create candles that look like living bouquets. This trend is ideal for the spring-summer season, for wedding decor, gifts for March 8th, and for decorating summer terraces. These candles are bought not only to burn, but also to admire them like paintings.

2. Winter Candles
Winter is the golden age for candle makers. From November to February, demand for candles increases five to eight times, and candle florists need to find a way to survive the colder months, as delicate candle flowers don't survive shipping, and they need to thrive during the cold season. So I found a solution: I created a new course designed specifically for the winter season. It features a variety of techniques, specifically designed for delivery during the cold winter months. The resulting candles are dense, durable, and withstand shipping well, yet still retain their elegance, delicacy, and beauty.

Thus, these two courses—"Flower Course" and "Winter Course" cover all the candle-making needs year-round. They help create candles in any season, as the artist already has techniques adapted to each season. This means there's no "slump" in skill during a particular season. This way, there's no "slump" in sales during any given season. My students always know which candles need to be made at what time, which ones will be popular, which ones are in demand, and which ones will survive delivery safely.

Let's take a look at the difference between my candles and regular candles from chain stores.
Scroll the table to the right.
Characteristics
Candles from chain stores:
Handmade candles:
1. Materials
100% paraffin. When burned, paraffin can release toxic substances and volatile organic compounds into the air, including known carcinogens such as alkenes, acetone, and benzene.
Natural wax is environmentally friendly and safe.
2. Design
Stamped, all candles are carbon copies. Simple, ordinary, template design.
Handcrafted pieces are all about aesthetics and uniqueness. Each artisan pours their heart and soul into their creations, creating with love. Meticulously crafted details, realistic snow-covered effects, and complex compositions.
3. Aroma
Sharp, synthetic.
Natural, subtle, unobtrusive.
4. Burning time
Usually faster, may smoke or leave a carbon deposit.
It often burns longer due to the use of natural materials, as well as combinations with other container waxes, which burn several times longer, from 20 hours.
5.Emotional value
A functional object that does not carry any particular emotional load.
You can't find candles like these everywhere. They can only be ordered from handcrafted candle makers. They possess a special energy and create a unique atmosphere. They're not just decorative items, but a gift made with love, with every detail meticulously crafted. Each candle is unique and unlike any other.

By the way, you can also buy beeswax from me. I make all my candles from it. It's already been tested.
When choosing wax, it's important to:

  • be natural, the wax should be bleached with UV rays to preserve all its beneficial properties wax stickiness,
  • so the flower parts stay securely in place flexibility,
  • so it can be sculpted stiffness,
  • so it holds its shape well

All these properties are found in wax from the OVVAGE brand. To find out availability, message me on Telegram.

Another frequently asked question: Is the candle business financially profitable?
Yes! Candlemaking is profitable.

Firstly, because new and interesting things are always in demand.

Secondly, it's beautiful; handcrafted work is always appreciated.

Third, let's look at the numbers. If we generalize across different candles, the average candle's production cost is between 10 and 20%. The rest goes toward markup. This means you can earn between 7 and 19 dollars on each candle. These candles are exclusive, not stamped, so their prices range from 12 to 32 dollars.

In my courses, we also discuss the cost of candles, how to save money, how to speed up the manufacturing process, and much more.
What to do if you're afraid to start? Are you afraid to take on a new candle business?
I've created 5 commandments for a successful candle florist that always help me:
  • Self acceptance
I embrace my desire to create beauty and give myself the time and space to grow without stress, in silence, just to create for myself.
  • Awaken yourself
All good artists are ordinary women and they didn't create masterpieces right away; it takes time, which means I can awaken myself too.
  • Create beauty
The creative process is beautiful in itself, so I have nothing to lose if I start, on the contrary, what if I do something that is immediately beautiful and can be sold, so I’ll just start with one petal.
  • Create for yourself
If my hands are shaking and I can't attach the petal, it means I'm very sensitive, I need time and I'll try again later and create for myself.
  • Start small
Candle making can be a great hobby, I don't have to sell, make to order and create a business right away, I can come to everything gradually, I'll start small.
But what if you suddenly want more than just "for yourself"? Is it possible to build a business around winter candles, and how?
Yes, it's possible. I can share some information on what you need to consider to get the process started:
1. Candle Assortment. The course program allows you to create an endless line of diverse interior candles. Combine different textures and scents to create exclusive pieces. The course techniques cover all market needs during the most profitable period. You will be able to assemble a complete collection.

2. Your own brand. I recommend thinking about the concept of your products. What are they for? What will they offer people? Come up with a catchy name that matches your vision and design beautiful packaging. Individuality is valued these days.

3. Seasonality. Keep in mind that winter candles will be in demand from October to April, and flower candles from April to November. This is important and should be taken into account to reduce the risk of damage during delivery and customer demand.

4. Customer acquisition. There should be multiple ways to find customers. Here, we can highlight social media, as well as Avito for online sales, markets and fairs for offline sales, partnerships with flower shops, beauty salons, etc., and word of mouth.

5. Qualification. As your skills grow, you can not only make custom pieces but also begin teaching master classes, either personally or in a studio.

6. Expansion. In any business, to get more, you need to invest more. Investing in advertising can increase sales. Once your turnover begins to stabilize, you can consider investing in advertising for expansion.
Imagine, while others are working, you are creating...
You can make candles for yourself, for your home, and as gifts. But it can also become a supplemental income, or even your main source of income. Imagine, while others are working, you are creating.
